So, you’re the best man and through all the excitement of pre-wedding parties and events the one thing that looms over you is ‘that speech’. For many the best man wedding speech is something they look up to with fear and a great sense of apprehension. Seven out of ten people actually have a fear of getting up and speaking in front of people. But, like most things we fear, the fear of it is worse than actually doing it.

Fortunately, your best man wedding speech is not about you. It’s about the groom and more specifically your speech is recognition of the person who’s getting married. So many best men make the vital mistake of embarrassing or ‘slagging’ off the groom during their speeches. Not only will this make the groom look bad, but it will also make you look bad and can even spoil the whole atmosphere at the wedding. The best man wedding speech is an important part of the wedding and one that can make the wedding really memorable.

Any great speech appeals to human emotions. If you want your best man wedding speech to be truly memorable, you want it to appeal to human emotions – laughter, happiness, sadness, curiosity. Just think of any good movie and you will realize that it appeals to you on an emotional level. Here are 5 tips for creating a best man wedding speech that will be remembered by all and make the entire wedding an even greater experience.

1. Prepare
Regardless of how good or bad you are at speaking in front of people, don’t think you can just make it up on the day. Preparation will not only give you the confidence to deliver a cracking speech, but it really shines through in your speech. Take the time to really think about what you are going to say, write it down and if you have to, rehearse your speech. You can greatly reduce and even eliminate the fear when you are well prepared.

2. Be Sincere
The one thing that can never be faked is sincerity. Whatever you say, be sincere. Sincerity is something that really touches people on an emotional level. Your job in delivering a best man wedding speech is to find something good to say about the groom. Can you think of something that the groom did that really illustrates his character? Something that happened that really tells the story about who he is as a person? Stories not only illustrate your point, but it adds credibility and sincerity.

3. Be tactful
One of the BIG no-no’s in delivering your best man wedding speech is to break down the groom. It reflects badly on both of you. By trying to embarrass the groom with stupid stories from the past can really dampen the mood at a wedding and most often the reaction to these types of stories is very different to what you think it will be. The golden rule is – if you can’t find something good to say, don’t say it. Telling stories from the bachelor party is probably the last thing that people want to hear at a wedding.

4. Easy on the jokes
There is nothing so encouraging during a speech as a good joke that gets everybody going. On the other hand, there is nothing worse than a joke that people don’t get. If a joke is funny in the bar, it doesn’t mean it will be funny at a wedding party. If you are not naturally funny, please take it easy on the jokes and if you are going to tell a joke make sure that the groom’s grandmother won’t blush.

5. It’s All About The Delivery
In the end it all boils down to how you deliver your best man wedding speech. On the day, the proof will be in how you do it. The key is to be relaxed, well prepared, and confident. Above all – be sober! Most disastrous speeches are a result of finding confidence in a couple of drinks. Make notes if you have to, but never read your speech. Try and ‘talk’ as naturally as possible and don’t ‘speak’ to much. Vary your eye contact between the bride & groom and the audience and keep it up-beat.
